I’m Baa-aack!

Wow, what a crazy ride it has been.  The last 8 months certainly didn’t go as I expected it would, some of it was great and some terrible but ultimately the important thing is it is time to start anew and get down to business!

My brand new product Magic Affiliate Sales is finished and ready for launch in a few days.  Interested affiliates who would like to promote it can get all of the information and tools here.

Just a short post this time because I still have some work to do configuring the membership software and making sure it meets all of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rules and guidelines.

Speaking of ethical guidelines, I have recently joined the IM TrustWorthy group which aims to set a new standard in ethical marketing and has very clear guidelines that members must undertake to keep their membership.  In this day and age of dodgy marketers I think it is extremely important to align yourself as someone who is trustworthy and can deliver on their promises every day.  The site is also open to the general public who can search their database to find out exactly who they are dealing with or thinking of dealing with.

Apologies for my absense

Hi
Apologies for being so quiet lately. One of the 2 reasons for my absense is that I have been working very hard on my brand new product called Magic Affiliate Sales. This video training series is going to help a lot of people because it shows you exactly, step by step a proven system to promote other peoples’ products as an affiliate. You literally get to watch over my shoulder as I go through the process. I’m very excited about it and I know you will be too. Bands, Brands and Umbrellas. What The?…….

I thought today I would try to get you thinking a bit. Humour me, it’ll be fun!

First of all I’d like you to think of the 5 top rock or pop bands (whole bands not single artists) that you know. They don’t have to be current, just 5 of the more famous bands you can think of. If you’re stuck here’s some suggestions: U2, Def Leppard, The Black Eyed Peas, Rolling Stones, Queen, AC/DC, INXS, Deep Purple, R.E.M., Metallica, Led Zeppelin etc.

Ok, so if you heard one these bands’ songs on the radio you’d probably be able to recognize who it was even if they didn’t announce the name first. For example unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past thirty years or so you’d probably be able to listen to “In The Name Of Love” or “Another One Bites The Dust” and recognise it as being sung by U2 or Queen respectively.

That was the easy part. Now I want you to name all of the members of U2, Queen, AC/DC, Def Leppard and Led Zeppelin (or whoever you picked as your 5 top bands) without doing a Google search!

Unless you’re a real music buff I bet you can’t do it.

The reason is simple really: the bands are marketed by their record companies as exactly that – a band. U2 aren’t marketed as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr, they are marketed as U2. You’ve probably heard of Bono for his work outside of the band and you might remember The Edge because of his unusual stage name but as for poor old Adam and Larry…..

Stay with me, there is a point here and it can be directly related to how you run and market your own business!

The point is that U2 (and our other famous bands) have been marketed using a technique called “Umbrella Branding” which is a very powerful method of building a strong, identifiable brand. Imagine if they were known by their individual names rather than as U2. You could imagine the radio announcer reading out all of their names every time the song is played, it wouldn’t be nearly as effective or as memorable as simply saying “U2″. The band example makes it easy to see how a hugely popular group of musicians can exist and be recognizable collectively but not so much when they are apart. It makes it easier to sell CDs every time they release something new because you know and trust them (as a band) to make good music.

Many huge corporations build their name and reputations in business doing the exact same thing. Think of Nestle or Cadburys. Both of these world wide corporations have several sub brands that they promote under the “umbrella” of the big brand name. Let me give you an example:

Nestle have several chocolate sub brands like Kit Kat, Aero and Club. These chocolate brands are strong in their own right but they are so much stronger when they also carry the name “Nestle” on the packaging. When you see the name Nestle you see familiarity and feel a sense of trust because you know they have many quality products. You’d be much more likely to buy a brand new chocolate bar called “Nestle Dig Dog” than a chocolate bar called “Rob’s Dig Dog” wouldn’t you? Again that’s because of the trust you have in the large corporation that you know. You’ve heard of Nestle, you know they make many, many products which you have probably had or used before and liked them. It wouldn’t be a difficult decision to buy the new Nestle Dig Dog chocolate bar because even though it has a stupid name you know it must be ok if Nestle make it.

Now think about whether you would be comfortable buying a “Rob’s Dig Dog” chocolate bar. Who the hell is Rob?? What else does he make? Is he a backyard chocolate maker or a does he have a factory? Is he licensed to sell food? Is it safe to eat? There are so many questions that you might ask of Rob that you wouldn’t ask of Nestle because you know Nestle, you don’t know Rob.

It’s actually exactly the same for Internet Marketing.

If you are buying a product from someone you know and trust you will be 50 times more likely to hand over your hard earned cash to that person than to someone you have never heard of and don’t know, especially in the faceless world of the Internet. This is where Umbrella Marketing comes in to play once again. The more savvy marketers are already doing this, some of them are even doing it without realizing it! Another way to think of it is “reputation”. It’s essentially the same thing and if you are smart you can make the most of everything you do to build your own umbrella brand.

A word of warning – it will only be effective if you are ethical and produce quality products or service. If you engage in dubious practices you will get the same umbrella effect, only it will be to rapidly build a bad reputation and make everything you do harder.

Back to the good guys. Long term readers will know that I always recommend thinking of yourself as a brand and marketing yourself as if you were a Nestle or a Cadburys. If you keep a consistent message and build a reputation of providing quality products, advice or service you will build your own umbrella brand that will encompass everything that you do. This umbrella will make your previous buyers so trusting in you that anytime you bring out something new they will be eager to hand over their money to you because they know that you will only have their best interests at heart. Every time you release a new product or service you won’t have to go through the whole process of selling yourself or your product to a suspicious market, they will already know and trust you.

Again, don’t try to be shonky or it will bite you badly.

One Month Mentor is back!

Just a quick post to let you know about a coaching program that I have recently taken part in called John Thornhills One Month Mentor Program. This is another fine product by John that is designed to teach you how to build your very own internet marketing business from scratch in just 31 days.

Dealing With Difficult Customers

Today I wanted to share with you a true story about a customer complaint.  As I am still dividing my time between the offline and the online worlds until I can build my internet business up to a full time concern, I am still working as a sales manager for a large multinational company.  Part of my role is calling on existing retail customers and work with them to build their business and improve their turnover and profit.

Enter one of my customers, let’s call him Barry to protect the guilty.

Barry has a successful mixed business store selling drinks, groceries, newspapers etc.  Different countries have different names for these types of stores but here in Australia we call them “corner stores”.  Barry is also the sort of guy who is extremely difficult to deal with and believes that abuse and intimidation will get him further than saying “please” or “thank you”.  I know several companies who deal with him and all of them will give him nothing more than they have to because of his attitude.  This means no extra deliveries if he forgets to order, no extension on credit terms, no free gifts, nothing!  Even though this may lose the companies some sales, this person has annoyed them and harassed them so much they don’t care, they will simply do as little as they have to to keep his business and that is it.

Barry made a complaint against me last week.  He rang my head office and told them that he has not seen me for 12 months and that he was very unhappy with my service.

I, of course, got a “please explain” which I was happy to provide stating the real facts.

The real facts are that the last time I called in to the store was 4 weeks ago, just as I had called the 4 weeks before that and the 4 weeks before that.  Around 7 months ago I did a big promotion at his store where my company organised 3 racing cars to be at his store and we gave away over 300 items to his customers.  All at our expense.  It is to be noted that at the time Barry also stole some of the items that we were giving away, he’s a charming fellow is Barry.

So much for “not seeing him for 12 months.”  I also had a significant incidence with him about 3 months ago when he was unhappy with his deliveries, which I personally dealt with.

Lastly, Barry actually has cancer.  He has hardly been at the store for the last 6 months because he goes to have radiation therapy almost every morning, then goes home because he is feeling unwell.  He recently told another sales person I know that he doesn’t care if salespeople have been in his store when he wasn’t there, if he hasn’t seen them personally he is going to put in complaints about everyone!

Of course when I put all of this in my report my senior management realised the sort of person I was dealing with and passed on their sympathy to me!

So why am I telling you all of this? (believe me I could go on and on with stories about this guy!)

I just wanted to get the point across that no matter whether you work online or off you are always going to get the odd customer who is just completely unreasonable and seems to want to make your life hell.  That’s just the way they are and there’s nothing you can do or say that will change them in any way.  They will complain bitterly, put in all sorts of complaints, tell out and out lies and still expect you to give them awesome service with a smile on your face.

Well guess what?  It’s ok to refuse to deal with these people.  You don’t need their business because they will never be satisfied and they can actually cost you money in the long run.  Don’t waste any time trying to pacify them or keep them happy with free gifts or extra service.  If they want a refund give it to them and cut them loose.  Goodbye and good luck!  A word of warning though, never get into a slanging match with them because it will just drag you down to their level.  A short and professional Goodbye is all it takes.

Don’t get me wrong, people like Barry are a very small minority but they do exist and we all have to deal with them at one stage or another.

So forget about Barry, put your time and effort into helping the people who will help you back, it is 100 times more rewarding and will help keep your work a pleasure.

Top Gear And The Power Of Branding

I just got back from a short holiday I took to see Top Gear Live in Brisbane, here in beautiful Australia.  My family and I are big fans of the show (along with about 200 million other people!) and we had a great time.

Flying home on the plane yesterday I started thinking about just how powerful the Top Gear brand is.  We went down to see the show as part of a group of 15 people from all walks of life, but the interesting thing is on the day the shows were announced a few months back we all decided to go and see it without knowing anything about what was going to happen at the show.  None of us had seen or heard any reviews of the live shows and as these were Top Gear’s first shows in Australia no one we knew had even seen it.  We knew nothing except for what we had seen on the TV.

Yet we went out and bought tickets anyway, no one even had any second thoughts about the price.

Then we were offered Paddock Passes (Backstage) for an additional cost.  No problem, we bought those too, thank you very much.

Then we booked flights, motels and hire cars.

All up we spent a few hundred dollars per person on something we really knew very little about!

“Were Jeremy James and Richard going to be there?”

“What about the Stig?”

“Would there be awesome cars or was it just going to be them talking for a couple of hours?”

“Would there be stunts?”

We didn’t know the answers to any of these questions yet we still collectively spent a few thousand dollars with no hesitation because we knew the Top Gear brand and we trusted it.  We knew they wouldn’t dare come over here and put on a half-arsed show because they have a reputation to uphold and fans to keep happy.  Guess what?  We were more than happy, it was a great show and we will definitely go back next time, which I’m sure there will be as it sold out very quickly.

Building a trusted, reputable brand is something that I believe a lot of internet marketers don’t do, or don’t do very well.  They either don’t understand its power or they don’t care because they are too busy ripping people off.

Anyone who is selling themselves should always think of themselves as a product.  That product (the reputable marketer) needs to be developed and built into a strong, recognisable brand that will become an instant symbol of good value.  Think of any of the great brands of our time: Nike, BMW, Pepsi, iPod; they are all great brands that most people would have no hesitation in buying and would probably pay extra for, simply because they know and trust the name.

You are no different, create a strong brand around yourself and you will be amazed at the difference it makes, not only to your confidence in what you are doing but to your customers as well.

Give And You Shall Receive

I listened to a very interesting audio recording by Michael Cheney today.  I received an email from Michael with the link entitled *WARNING: your R-rated free audio from me*.  I have to admit my first thought was “Oh God what is Michael up to now?” and then “I’ll probably listen to it, there won’t even be any swearing, it’ll just be a sales pitch for something – I won’t bother”.  A couple of days went by and I was going back through my emails looking for something else, saw it still in my inbox, then curiosity got the better of me and I had a listen.

I was surprised.

Despite my initial skepticism it actually turned out to be a really good recording.  Michael was his typically excitable self and yes he even let a couple of choice words slip (although it wasn’t really R-rated!).  Yes there was a slight sales pitch in it, he was promoting his Manuscript Of Truth website, but there was no opt-in to listen and it was mainly about changing the way you view your marketing business, especially if you are not making any money.

The guts of it all was that you must first give before you can receive.  Pretty simple concept but one that he takes to the extreme in the form of offering real value to his subscribers, often in exchange for – you guessed it -nothing!  His simple philosophy is that if you stop concentrating on making money and instead concentrate on giving superb value to your subscribers, or potential subscribers, you will actually make a lot more money!

This is something that I too have learned over the last 20 years in my offline sales and marketing roles.  If you provide excellent service and value to your customers they will keep coming back to you time and time again.  They will stop looking towards your competitors because they will come to trust that YOU will give them the best deal they could get, they will no longer bother to shop around.

This creates loyalty, a word that is music to any marketer’s ears.  No matter what company you talk to or work for, Brand Loyalty is the holy grail.  Think about Coca Cola or Pepsi, these companies spends millions on marketing every week to try to make their customers loyal to them and them alone.  They keep doing it because it works – most people are loyal to either Coca Cola OR Pepsi, not both.

In the case of online marketing the brand loyalty becomes your customers’ loyalty to you – you are the brand!  The more loyalty you can create by treating your customers well and giving them superb value, even if they haven’t bought anything from you yet, the more money you will eventually make from them when they learn that you are indeed trustworthy.

A word of warning though: Never try to trick or bamboozle your customers with smoke and mirrors in the guise of providing value.  They will eventually see right through you and you will lose them for life, they’ll probably tell all their friends to stay away from you too.  This only works if you are genuine and genuinely provide top service and value.
